How to Create the Perfect Wellness Routine

Wellness is a word that seems to be everywhere these days. From the covers of glossy magazines to our friend’s posts on social media. To most of us, when we think of wellness we think of tough workouts and green juices.

But did you know that there’s so much more to crafting the perfect wellness routine?

What it really means is bettering our mental and physical health through intentional practices, in a way that works specifically for you.

Keep reading to find out how to create the perfect wellness routine for you.

A realistic meditation practice.

Mindfulness is the art of being present with yourself and meditation is a big part of that. We’re not talking about sitting cross-legged and “OooMmmm”ing until your neighbors file a complaint. Meditation can take many forms, as long as the focus is on your breathing and staying present.

For many athletes, running is considered a form of active meditation. Once you get past the initial burn and huffing, and you get to a comfortable pace for your fitness levels, the focus moves to your breathing and the sound of your feet hitting the ground.

If you aren’t really into the idea of running anywhere, you can always download an app like Calm or Headspace. Both apps offer guided meditations that are easy to follow and also provide practices for meditations as short as five minutes or as long as an hour.

The key to a great meditation routine is to stay consistent. Try starting with just five minutes before bed and work your way up from there.

Embrace your mental health.

The state of our mental health affects everything around us. From how often we eat to the state of our homes and surroundings. In order to start creating a better ‘us’ we need to take a good hard look at how our lives impact our mental health.

A great way to do this is by taking stock of how we feel day to day, what causes our anxieties, and what triggers us and writing all of those things down. Find a therapist that takes your insurance, and sign up for the next appointment.

Therapy used to be a taboo topic, but now, newer generations are embracing the practice. It can help you get out of your own head and give you actionable ways to improve your mental health.

Throw your unrealistic fitness goals out the window.

This might seem counter-productive, but unrealistic fitness goals can kill your morale. Instead, create a fitness plan that not only reflects your fitness levels right now but also one that you can enjoy.

For example, let’s say that you have been hitting the gym and lifting weights consistently. The program is tough and you always end up feeling more tired than you should. Instead of seeing the quick results that you hoped for, you’re getting demoralized and losing motivation.

You make a list of the physical activities that you actually enjoy and realize that they all take place in group settings. For you, fitness and community go hand-in-hand. Because of this, you decide to try that boxing gym up the street and end up loving the format.

Now, instead of dreading the next session or feeling fatigued, you look forward to every class and treat it like your most important appointment. Fitness goals become realistic and attainable, and you’re enjoying every second of the journey.

Nourish yourself.

Diet culture is dead. Long gone are the days of Atkins and South Beach Body books. Nourishing your body properly is en vogue, but you may not know where to start.

All of those green juices that you see on Instagram and those elaborate meals you’ve been pinning are way too complicated to realistically implement into your diet. We get it. Many of us have been in that same situation. Our advice is to stop scrolling and start listening…to yourself.

Food sensitivities are as unique to you as your own fingerprint. Maybe celery makes you gassy, or eggs make you nauseous. Maybe you thrive on healthy carbohydrates and healthy fats.

The only way to know how to nourish yourself the right way is by taking a food sensitivity test. In order to fuel your new wellness goals, you need to feel your best. Sometimes all that it takes is identifying which foods are triggering certain reactions in your body.
