Gut permeability to cow milk B-lactoglobulin (BLG) was significantly increased in patients with arthralgia and improved with an oligoantigenic diet. Patients with high titers of IgG to BLG showed the highest absorption of BLG and the groups with arthralgia showed higher BLG levels than those without arthralgia In all cases specific IgE to cow milk was absent These data suggest that the symptoms of a subgroup of patients with chronic urticaria and especially patients with joint complaints that subside with diet are related to excess intestinal permeability. Dietary manipulation has been found to improve symptoms in rheumatoid arthritis. Recently food allergy has been confirmed as a cause for arthralgia in allergic patients who also suffered from asthma or rhinitis. The majority of them had specific IgE to egg or dairy products.Dr. Bennett:
